The dreidel is a Jewish variant on the teetotum, a gambling toy found in many European cultures. Each side of the dreidel bears a letter of the Hebrew alphabet: נ (Nun), ג (Gimel), ה (He), ש (Shin), which together form the acronym for "נס גדול היה שם" (Nes Gadol Hayah Sham – "a great miracle happened there." These letters were originally a mnemonic for the rules of a gambling game played with a dreidel:

3D Designing and Printing a Dreidel
Tinkercad and Fusion 360 are most ideal for designing and printing dreidels. Both are free, and both include the Hebrew letter sets and geometric shapes you'll need. See 3D Printing for additional information on this process.
AEC Dreidel Competition
In celebration of Hanukkah, students are invited to design and fabricate a dreidel using the 3D printers. Students can work as individuals or in teams of two to four students to create their designs using TinkerCad or Fusion 360, then print them in the Fab Lab. A competition will be held to determine "Longest Spins" and "Best Looking" for each division!
